Takeaway from Dow’s Latest Plummet: Hold steady

What triggered Wednesday’s dramatic 800-point drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and what does it mean for investors? Media pundits are firing on all cylinders with various theories, from hand-wringing over tariffs to the onset of global economic recession. While this latest Dow sell-off was significant—and followed another 767-point fall on August 5—I urge investors to resist making knee-jerk changes in their portfolios as a response. Volatile periods are an inevitable part of the ride.

Why go for a goal?

Painted high on the wall of the dojo where I study mixed martial arts is a quote from Bruce Lee: “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” In class, those words remind me to keep focusing on mastering the basics—foot shape, balance, follow-through, control—as I work to reach the next level. As a marketing communicator who helps companies express their core purpose in the world, Bruce’s quote also holds deeper lessons about why we create goals—and what they enable us to achieve.
